MEMORIAL DAY CEREMONY
On Memorial Day in Hazlet, a very large crowd of over 300 people gathered at Veterans Memorial Park to pay their respects to those who gave all. It was a dignified and reverent ceremony with music from the new Hazlet Pops community band. Monmouth County Commissioner Sue Kiley read the names of Hazlet residents who died in service to our country, as a bell tolled solemnly for each. Hazlet VFW Commander John Conti and other Post 4303 leaders spoke about sacrifice. Hazlet Police Chaplain Barry Mulligan offered prayers.
Hazlet Police Chief Ted Wittke dedicated a new police monument in the circle. Committeeman Skip McKay, a former Navy SEAL, described Hazlet's legacy of service dating back to the Revolutionary War and how the beautiful banners adorning the park and adjacent area highlighting township veterans, active service members and fallen will ensure Hazlet residents are always remembered for their patriotic service and sacrifice. Scouts, the Hazlet Police Honor Guard and professional presenter Sarah Williams of Hazlet gave polish to the ceremony.
Afterward, visitors toured Veterans Park to view the red, white and blue banners, which will remain in place until Veterans Day. Thank you to the Provident Bank, Hazlet Recreation Advisory Committee, Panther Press of Matawan and BagelBoyz for your contributions to making make this year's May 31st Memorial Day ceremony so special.
HAZLET POLICE
Hazlet Police K-9s were highlighted twice last week.
Rico Assists in Rescue
On May 25 around 11 pm, Patrolman Cody Sachs and his partner K-9 Rico were dispatched to Matawan to assist in locating a missing elderly female with dementia. Upon arrival, Ptl. Sachs met with Ptl. Sheehan of Matawan PD and performed a sweep of the residence to ensure the female was not hiding inside. Once it was confirmed the female was not inside, the family directed Ptl. Sachs and K-9 Rico in the direction they believed the female walked in.
After searching the area for some time with no positive results, Ptl. Sachs and K-9 Rico began checking the opposite direction where K-9 Rico quickly located a scent trail. Ptl. Sachs and K-9 Rico continued to track the scent to the back of a residence on a street nearby. In the rear of the residence was a steep embankment in which K-9 Rico almost fell. K-9 Rico began to bark in order to alert Ptl. Sachs he detected a human odor in the embankment.
Ptl. Sachs illuminated the area with his flashlight and observed a female at the bottom of the embankment in the area where K-9 Rico alerted. Ptl. Sachs identified himself and the female identified herself as the missing woman they were searching for. Ptl. Sheehan from Matawan PD went down the embankment to begin rendering aid to the woman.
If it had not been for the efforts of Ptl. Sachs and K-9 Rico, this woman would not have been found in a timely manner which could have resulted in much more serious injuries or consequences. Everyone here at the Hazlet Township Police Department is very proud of Ptl. Sachs and K-9 Rico’s diligence and dedication to finding this missing woman.
K-9 Diablo: End of Watch On May 28, Hazlet Police announced the death of K-9 Diablo. K-9 Diablo was acquired by the Hazlet Police and his K-9 handler Lt. Kevin Geoghan in September 2010. Together, the K-9 team spent a significant time training in the areas of Narcotics Detection, Tracking and Apprehension. He faithfully served the residents of Hazlet and surrounding towns until his retirement on January 1, 2020.
