9/11 Candlelight Commemoration

Join us in a solemn remembrance of September 11, 2001 — the 20th anniversary of that day's tragic events. 

To accommodate those who plan to attend morning ceremonies in New York City, we will gather Saturday evening, September 11,  beginning at 6:45 pm at the gazebo in Veterans Park, near the pond, 1776 Union Avenue. The service is expected to begin around 7:30 p.m. There will be live music and prayers. At dusk, candles will be distributed and lighted. Names will be read of those we lost in our Hazlet family. 

At the conclusion, all are invited to take a quiet walk to the township's 9/11 memorial. 

Participants will include the Hazlet Police Department, Chaplain and Honor Guard; Hazlet First Aid; Hazlet Fire Department and the Raritan High School Marching Band.

All are welcome. Please use the Green Acres Drive entrance. Limited seating available, so feel free to bring chairs. The tribute will be held rain or shine.

On Labor Day, Sept. 6, members took advantage of beautiful weather to take a final dip and say goodbye to friends at the Hazlet Swim & Tennis Club. It was an especially hot summer! Thank you to all the members, campers and staff who made 2021 a successful season.

Meetings This Week

The Environmental Commission meets 7 pm Monday, Sept. 13 at Town Hall. 

The Land Use Board meets 7 pm. Thursday, Sept. 16. at Town Hall. 

Town-Wide Garage Sale

Hazlet Township Recreation will host another great Town-Wide Garage Sale on Saturday, October 16 from 9 am to 4 pm. There is no permit nor fee required! You can submit your address and items for sale on our free interactive map which allows buyers to map a route on sale day. All the details are at HazletTwp.org/GarageSale.

There is a new children's librarian in town, and she has plans! Join Melissa Cecchini for fun activities at the library at 251 Middle Road. See schedule for free family and virtual storytimes, craft projects, puppet shows and summer reading challenge rewards. Print out a copy for the fridge.

Hazlet Day 2021 is Oct. 2

Hazlet Day 2021 is coming Saturday, October 2. Enjoy a family-friendly day outdoors to reconnect with neighbors, learn more about your hometown and enjoy entertainment in Veterans Park. The event is free to the public.

Vendors, nonprofits and community groups are invited to participate and should fill out our online application to secure a spot. Deadline to submit payment (if applicable) is Thursday, September 23, 2021.

All residents affected by tropical storm IDA are encouraged to file a claim at the FEMA website regardless if they have flood insurance or not, even if the County is not included on the current disaster declaration.

Saturday, Sept. 18 - PBA Car Show Festival at Veterans Park, 9 am to 3 pm. Cars, food trucks, family fun and a Dunk Tank. Details on the PBA's Facebook page.

Saturday, Sept. 25Car Seat Event. Come to the Hazlet Police Dept. and get your child seat installed or checked by one of our certified car seat technicians. No appointment necessary during event. Hours are 11 am to 2 pm. Location is 255 Middle Road.

Tropical Storm Ida Soaks Hazlet

Hazlet Police, along with our volunteer Fire and First Aid crews responded Wednesday night to the severe rainfall brought by the remnants of Hurricane Ida. The rain started in Hazlet around 5 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 1 and fell in sheets for hours. A section of Craig Street, off Bethany Road, experienced flooding that later receded that night. (See photos.) It was estimated that over 8 inches of rain fell in Newark. Hazlet Police said they responded to over 50 calls for service. Of those calls, 22 were to assist motorists and 7 were for a water rescue.

Labor Day Holiday

Labor Day is Monday, September 6. It is a federal holiday. Hazlet Town Hall offices will be closed. Other closures include the DPW Yard on Leocadia Court; New Jersey Courts; Monmouth County Library System and the U.S. Post Office

Monmouth County residents are invited to join a county-led campaign to “Light up the Shore” to honor heroes of 9/11 at 8:46 p.m. on September 11. 

Residents can gather at the shoreline and use their cellphones at 8:46 p.m. to light up the skyline to honor the heroes of September 11, 2001. 

“For the families of those lost and to those who are still fighting illnesses stemming from the cleanup, please know Monmouth County will never forget. We especially remember the 147 men and women who called our county home,” said Commissioner Deputy Director Susan M. Kiley, a resident of Hazlet. “These lights are a symbol that we will never forget, and we will always rise above tragedy.”

Free Rabies Clinic Oct. 16

Hazlet Township will host a free rabies clinic on Saturday, Oct. 16 from 9 am to 11 am. It is open to all Monmouth County residents. The location will be the DPW Yard at Leocadia Court (off Laurel Avenue.) All animals must be on a leash or in a carrier. For questions, please call Hazlet Health Services at 732-217-8688.
To license your pet in January 2022, the rabies shot must be valid through October 31, 2022. If your pet is deceased, or no longer living at your residence, please advise Hazlet Health Services to update records.

Recycling Yard Hours Shift

Summer hours are ending at the DPW Recycling Yard at 39 Leocadia Court, After Labor Day, Sept. 6, the yard, returns to this schedule:

  • Weekdays: 7:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
  • Saturday: 8:15 a.m. to 1:45 p.m.
  • Sunday: Closed

It is closed on Labor Day, September 6.
